Since 2000, Akshaya Patra has been working tirelessly toward providing fresh and nutritious meals to children every single school day. We are continuously leveraging technology to multiply our reach. The state-of-the-art kitchens have become a subject of study and have attracted curious visitors from around the world.
Over the past 19 years, the constant support from the Government of India, various State Governments and associated organisations has enabled the programme to grow by leaps and bounds. Persistent support from corporates, individual donors, and well-wishers have helped us to grow from serving just 1,500 children in 5 schools in 2000 to serving 1.8 million school children in 20,000 schools across 12 states and 2 Union Territories in India every day through our Food For Education Programme.
The free school lunches enable the children we serve to attend school instead of having to work for food, giving them the opportunity to concentrate in class and improve their academic performance, and allows them to grow and be healthy develop healthily. The children are encouraged to enjoy their meal together as equals, irrespective of gender, religion or caste. We are globally recognised as one of the Top 25 NGOs in the World and have been studied by leading institutions, including Harvard Business School. We have an ambitious goal to reach 5 million children by 2025 – helping them to gain the lifelong gift of education and to build a brighter future.
